You want the best example of what kind of gospel is being preached in American pulpits?
Wowwwww. Such good news.
Oh that’s interesting because I don’t really know many gospels like this being preached in many pulpits across America. But maybe I just don’t have a lot of experience going to the roughly 320,000 churches in America.
That said, while I don’t necessarily condone Driscoll’s message, I think many people just hear what they want to hear instead of really thinking about it from all perspectives. I’m willing to bet nobody’s actually watched the full sermon this is taken from. I also just (literally just, like 5 minutes ago) had a conversation with a friend about this very video. And the conclusion we reached is that he had a good idea he was trying to reach to us, but that his words and diction were not Spirit-led nor filled and probably might have come from fleshly frustration.
Now, I’m not speaking for Driscoll in any way, but I really hate (I utterly despise) the fact that the body of Christ turns on one another like this. We are quick to call people wrong, even if we’ve never met them before or heard anything else they have had to say. If you haven’t met Driscoll and asked him what he really meant by this message, I think you should be holding your tongue because anybody else could take something out of context that you said or did and totally blow that up to make you look bad.
So do I think he not talking out of love? Maybe, but not too sure.
Do I think he was Spirit-led? Not really.
But do I forget that he is just another brother who falls prone to stumbling, just as we do? No.
Do I think we should judge him in a negative way? No.
We should definitely criticize so that we may sharpen each other. But not so that we turn on each other.
Not a lot of what I said was clear, but I’m not going to expand here. I’m just pitching in my two cents. Please, brothers and sisters, don’t be so quick to judge. Then how will the world ever know that we are His disciples?
My one and only response to this issue. Do I love Driscoll? Yes. I have nothing but love for this man. But why do I put him on blast? It’s because countless messages like this (and i have heard enough to conclude to this point) are being preached and young people are leaving the church. I find myself apologizing to believers that were burned by the church, pagans, and atheist and others and ask for their forgiveness on the behalf of biblically illiterate and loveless leaders/congregation members. I do this out of love regardless even if it makes religious individuals uncomfortable. You want to talk about why the world doesn’t recognize God as love? It’s because of mindsets, messages, and status quo like this IN THE CHURCH. You want the world to recognize us for our love? Then STOP and SPEAK OUT when these kind of crap is being spoken out to the general public. I’m pissed because He’s misrepresenting my Dad
